Fishman's Paradise
Fishman's Paradise
Fiona (Yuhong) Shen

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 12.2 x 16.1 x 1
Artist's Statement: This painting was inspired by a seafood market I visited in Dijon, France this summer. The mackerel fish looked fresh and inviting, and the markings on the fish were richly expressive. I used a wet-on-wet technique to depict the color gradients and stripes on the fish. I applied highlights, shadows, and dark areas to create the value, and I also portrayed each fish as a distinct individual.

The Elder, Neyaashiinigmiing
Lin Souliere

State/Province: Ontario
Country: Canada

Dimensions: 30 x 22 x 1.5
Artist's Statement: Searching for ancient trees and rock, I found this amazing old tree on a trail in Neyaashiinigmiing (Cape Croker) Ontario, where I live nearby on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula. Its twisted and gnarled trunk, broken branches and hollowed cavities are witness to the life around it and within it. The young saplings nearby are fed by the old trees’ energy, being cared for like a forest family. My art expresses my deep connection to the forest, the trees, the wildlife living within this natural world. The forest is both complex and alive; silent and singing; where the trees talk to me.

Country: Canada

Dimensions: 15 x 11
Artist's Statement: Cuba used to give people a mysterious feeling, now more tourists come after its opening. A few years ago, I traveled to Havana, Cuba. I love the local cultural color very much. The ancient buildings and classic cars are very picturesque. This dilapidated building attracted me. The raw iron window frames, the iron bars on the balcony, and the shabby earth walls are all lifelike, which are very good subjects for watercolor painting.
